JAPAN FACTS - both useful and useless facts but for some interesting facts
- Over 2/3 of the country is covered in mountains and forests
- Population of Japan: 127 million people, and over 5 million vending machines (more vending machines than people in NZ)
- Largest metro area: Tokyo metro 32 million people, almost 1.5 times Australia's total population and over 7 times New Zealand's population excluding sheep.
- Train departures from Tokyo Station: Approx 260 bullet trains per day and about 3000 in total per day.
- Busiest train stations: Shinjuku about 3.6 million per day, Ikebukuro with about 2.7 million. Sydney's Town Hall approx 95,000 per day.
- National Park's and Quasi National Parks: 85 (lot's of nature)
- Postal Savings: approx $3 TRILLION in total ($3,000,000 million) - pretty much earning almost nothing in interest! A lot more is stuffed in almost no interest bearing bank accounts and mattresses.
- Most common form of payment: CASH (many people still don't have a credit card)
- Cost of McDonald's burger in Japan: Cheese burger $1.30 approx. Australia $2.15 and NZ $1.70AUD approx
- Minimum train fare: $1.80 for adult. Cityrail $2.40 for adult
- Safety: Japan generally ranks as one of the safest countries in the world to travel (some of Australia's other popular destinations usually missing from the lists - UK, USA, Indonesia and Thailand)
- DFAT (Australia's travel advisory site) has currently the safest "Overall Japan" warning in place. This is better than the warning for the USA, Canada, UK, Germany, France, most of Europe etc. It is on a par with the level for New Zealand.
- Radiation levels in Tokyo are lower than many parts of Australia. Sydney radiation levels range between Tokyo's current readings and 3 times Tokyo's levels. Some parts of Japan have radiation levels 5 times LOWER than Australia.
- WHO (World Health Organization) never had a travel warning for Tokyo and considered most of the warnings excessive and unnecessary. Australia has now reduced the travel warning. Countries like the US have a similar warning for Japan as they do for Australia and the rest of the world
